Travel Guide

In between the fishing town of Cambrils and the small town of La Pineda is the great resort of Salou; a destination where there is something for everyone! For decades, Salou holidays have been favoured by many tourists who keep coming back year after year for its beaches, bars and friendly atmosphere. The British and Russians are the most popular tourists.

Salou has an immense history dating back 2,500 years to the ancients Greeks who named the town 'Salauris' and used it as a port. In the middle ages a fleet of ships sailed from the port of Salou and fought a battle in the Balearic Islands which was conquered and the Kingdom of Mallorca was born.

Salou is located in Catalonia, described by many as the 'best part' of Spain with Barcelona about 1 hours drive to the north, the city of Reus only 10 km away and the city of Tarragona located 10km to the east. The 'Costa Daurada' or 'Golden Coast' is the stretch of coastline that runs by these areas - the name really does reflect the amazing beaches.

All flights to Salou fly to Reus Airport, then a 15 minute taxi ride goes straight to the town of Salou.

A positive aspect of Salou is attractions are relatively close by, some are in walking distance and others are a short car journey away.

Downtown Salou is built up of hotels, bars and shops with Llevant Beach in view at the promenade end, not to mention the town's other beaches: Platja de Ponent, Platja dels Capellans, Platja Llarga and Cala Crancs.

Salou is a great choice for family holidays, especially with small children. Port Aventura is the main and best known attraction in town. Golf is another popular reason why holiday makers go to this part of Spain with Lumine Golf Course in the vicinity. Salou gets very busy during peak season, however it is easy to find quieter niches in town.

The main streets in town with many bars, restaurants and shops are Carrer Major, Via Roma, Passeig de Jaume I, Carrer de Barcelona and Carrer de la Ciutat de Reus. Mercat Municipal de Salou on Via Roma is a great attraction for food shopping with its various market traders. Although there are many British bars and restaurants, native Spanish bars exist, serving wonderful tapas and local beers like Mahou and San Miguel. Located a little west from Salou central is the old town with its nice selection of bars, restaurants and shops.

Going further west, a short taxi ride will head into the adjacent town of Cambrils; a historic town with a robust fishing community and grand harbour. The promenade and main street have many bars and restaurants and are usually busy throughout the day.

Going back into Salou and driving a short distance to the east comes the small town of La Pineda. A good place for a family day out with the huge waterpark 'Aquopolis' and the fabulous stretch of beaches known as Plaja-de-La-Pineda, Plaja-de-El's-Prats and Playa del Racó. When day turns into night and a club with music is on the cards, Pacha la Pineda is located at the rear of Aquopolis.

Further east...a day trip to Tarragona is an interesting discovery for shopping and Roman ruins.
